Democrats Narrow 2028 Convention Finalists To Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia

The Democratic National Committee has narrowed the competition to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention to three cities: Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. DNC Chair Ken Martin announced the finalists, advancing them from an earlier shortlist of five that also included Atlanta and Chicago.

The convention is scheduled for August 7–10, 2028. The selection process now moves into detailed contract and logistics negotiations, with a final host city decision expected later in 2026. The DNC began soliciting proposals in September 2025 and conducted site visits to the five candidate cities in April and May 2026, evaluating factors such as venue capacity, hotel inventory, transportation, security, and fundraising potential.

The Three Finalists

Each remaining city has prior experience hosting Democratic conventions and has proposed primary arenas paired with nearby convention centers:

  • Boston, Massachusetts: TD Garden as the main venue, with the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center as a secondary site. Boston last hosted the DNC in 2004.
  • Denver, Colorado: Ball Arena as the primary venue, alongside the Colorado Convention Center. Denver hosted Democratic conventions in 1908 and 2008.
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Xfinity Mobile Arena as the primary venue, with the Pennsylvania Convention Center as a secondary site. Philadelphia has hosted Democratic conventions in 1936, 1948, and 2016.
All three cities are Democratic strongholds bordered by suburban areas that have become increasingly important in recent elections. They also offer access to labor unions, key demographic groups, and fundraising networks. Pennsylvania stands out as a major battleground state that Donald Trump carried in 2024, while Massachusetts and Colorado have reliably supported Democrats in recent presidential cycles.

Broader Context

Republicans have already selected Houston as the site of their 2028 convention. The Democratic gathering will take place against the backdrop of a wide-open presidential primary, as the party seeks a nominee to challenge the incumbent Republican administration after the 2024 election. The convention remains a key platform for formally nominating the presidential and vice-presidential candidates, unifying the party, and launching the general election campaign.

A final decision on the host city is expected before the end of the year.
